Dropped your iPhone in water? Act fast.
Water and electronics don’t mix—and even though recent iPhone models are water-resistant, they’re not waterproof. That means liquid exposure can still damage internal components if not handled properly.
At iBluetech, Apple Authorized Service Provider in Saint-Lambert, we help customers every day with devices that have suffered accidental liquid damage. Here’s our certified guide to give your iPhone the best chance of survival.
Step-by-Step: Apple-Recommended First Aid for a Wet iPhone
1. Turn off your iPhone immediately
Power it down right away. Do not swipe, tap, or press any buttons. Keeping your iPhone on can cause electrical short circuits if moisture reaches internal components.
2. Never charge or plug anything in while wet
This is critical. Do not connect a Lightning cable, headphones, or any accessories. Wait until the device is completely dry.
3. Gently remove excess moisture
Take off the case, remove your SIM card, and use a soft, lint-free cloth to pat your iPhone dry.
Don’t use a hair dryer, oven, or heat gun—extreme heat can permanently damage your device.
Skip the rice—Apple does not recommend it, and it may introduce dust or grains into your ports.
4. Use silica gel (not rice)
If available, place the iPhone in an airtight container with silica gel packets (often found in new shoe boxes or electronics). This method is far more effective and safe for absorbing moisture.
5. Let it dry—patiently
Leave the iPhone upside down (with the Lightning port facing down) in a dry, room-temperature space for at least 24–48 hours. Avoid turning it on too soon.
6. Try powering it on and back up your data immediately
Once fully dried, turn on your iPhone. If it powers up, back up your data right away via iCloud or Finder on your Mac—delayed water damage is still possible.
7. Bring it to iBluetech for a full diagnostic
Even if your iPhone works, corrosion may develop over time.
